Spadina/Dupont Railway
Underpass
Public Art Project
This artwork is dedicated to the
Annex Community and the citizens of
the City of Toronto by his Worship,
Mayor Art Eggleton.
Railway underpasses are significant
landmarks along major city thorough-fares. As a means of recognizing
these historic structures, a national competition, sponsored by Toronto
City Council through its Public Art Commission and Planning and Development
Department, was undertaken in 1989. Spadina Line is the first in
a series of projects to be implemented.
Spadina Line marks a pedestrian route
marks a pedestrian route connecting the railway with the Baldwin Steps
to the north and with the subway to the south. At regular intervals,
seven illuminated switchposts highlighte inlaid bronze words that recall
the historic development of the railway and of Spadina Avenue. Within
the underpass, a clock, an archive, and three metal bars trace the angle
of the sun at the points of equinox and solstices, collectively recording
time's various rhythms.
